چکیده

Jazz music is a genre that consists mainly of improvising over known tunes, represented as a lead sheet. This study addresses the question ‘towhat extent does a lead sheet carry information about its composer?’ Primarily, this study considers chord progressions alone, and secondarily melodic and temporal information combined with various multiple viewpoint models. Using these classifiers, a novel subsequence selection algorithm is presented to trace stylistic similarities within a lead sheet. We conclude that composers can, to a reasonable extent, be recognized from their chord progressions, and that the consideration of melodic and temporal information improves classification accuracy by a small but statistically significant amount.

Learning to Create Jazz Melodies Using a Product of Experts

We describe a neural network architecture designed to learn the musical structure of jazz melodies over chord progressions, then to create new melodies over arbitrary chord progressions from the resulting connectome (representation of neural network structure). Our architecture consists of two sub-networks, the interval expert and the chord expert, each being LSTM (long short-term memory) recur...

Jazz musicians reveal role of expectancy in human creativity.

Creativity has been defined as the ability to produce work that is novel, high in quality, and appropriate to an audience. While the nature of the creative process is under debate, many believe that creativity relies on real-time combinations of known neural and cognitive processes. One useful model of creativity comes from musical improvisation, such as in jazz, in which musicians spontaneousl...

A Comprehensive Online Database of Machine-Readable Lead-Sheets for Jazz Standards

Jazz standards are songs representative of a body of musical knowledge shared by most professional jazz musicians. As such, the corpus of jazz standards constitutes a unique opportunity to study a musical genre with a “closed-world” approach, since most jazz composers are no longer in activity today. Although many scores for jazz standards can be found on the Internet, no effort, to our knowled...

A Grammatical Approach to Automatic Improvisation

We describe an approach to the automatic generation of convincing jazz melodies using probabilistic grammars. Uses of this approach include a software tool for assisting a soloist in the creation of a jazz solo over chord progressions. The method also shows promise as a means of automatically improvising complete solos in real-time. Our approach has been implemented and demonstrated in a free s...

Analysis of Chord Progression Data

Harmony is an important component in music. Chord progressions, which represent harmonic changes of music with understandable notations, have been used in popular music and Jazz. This article explores the question of whether a chord progression can be summarized for music retrieval. Various possibilities for chord progression simplification schemes, N-gram construction schemes, and distance fun...
